REFLECTION

Experience
I have been looking forward to taking Typography since around 2 years ago when I first chose my free electives. While I was not aware of what was awaiting me, I have always appreciated typography and language/words
, and thus learning how to express words better through typography seemed very exciting to me. I also have always been interested in design, and art as a whole. Thankfully, my experience this semester was not disappointing, but far from it. In fact, I have enjoyed Typography the most amongst all of the modules I have taken so far. While it was challenging, especially the third task where we had to create our own typeface, it helped me both academically and personally. I also really appreciated that I was able to work individually on all of the tasks, as it is something I do not often get to do in other modules. Additionally, I thought the assignments were spread well throughout the semester, which positively contributed to my learning experience. I also liked that Mr. Vinod always provided us with feedback that we could immediately learn from and apply. It is also very important to me that lecturers allow us to comfortably express any concerns or difficulties we are facing, which Mr. Vinod has always encouraged us to do. Overall, I can say with certainty that I am thankful for my experience this semester, and that it has been a positive and enriching one.

Observations
Throughout these 14 weeks, I have definitely become more observant of type and all of its characteristics and nuances. I now find myself noticing typography anywhere and everywhere, and subconsiously analysing it (which has been quite fun). While I always believed in the significance of typography, I think I only now noticed how huge of a role it plays in design and even just in our everyday lives. I also really liked seeing everyone's work throughout the semester, as it was very interesting to see how differently we all interpret things.

Findings
I previously approached typography from only an artistic point-of-view, but these 14 weeks have taught me the technicalities and rules/guidelines of typography which I was not aware of. I also learnt that sometimes all it takes is very minor tweaks – an additional single line, a slight tilt, varying sizes – to be able to typographically portray meaning. To me, however, my greatest finding this semester is my love for typography. Taking this module has made me realise that I genuinely enjoy learning about typography, and that I would like to invest time into it beyond the classroom.
